Most international moves out of Luxembourg involve a gap that no shipping company on either side wants to deal with — the period between your Luxembourg lease ending and your new home in the destination country actually being ready. This guide covers how that gap works in practice, what your options are, and how to get your boxes onto a DPD, DHL, UPS or FedEx van without making a single trip yourself.
When you leave Luxembourg for another country — whether for a new job, retirement, family, or a corporate transfer — your timeline almost never lines up cleanly. Your Luxembourg landlord wants the keys back on a fixed date set by your three-month notice period. Your destination housing might not be ready for weeks or months. And the international courier or relocation company can collect from one address and deliver to another, but most will not hold your boxes in the middle while you find somewhere to send them.
The result is a familiar headache. You have packed, sorted, labelled, and finished saying goodbye — and now you have a stack of boxes with nowhere to go for the next four to twelve weeks. International couriers like DPD, DHL, FedEx, GLS, and UPS will all happily collect from a Luxembourg address and deliver to your destination. They will not, however, hold your shipment in storage in between.
One of our customers in 2026 moved from Belvaux to Denmark via a six-week stop with family in Vietnam. Her Luxembourg lease ended in June. Her Danish flat was not ready until late July. Storagelux collected eight boxes from her Belvaux address before she flew, held them for five weeks, and handed them to DPD on the day her Copenhagen address confirmed. She never came back to Luxembourg.
Self-storage units in Luxembourg are designed for people who come and go. You drive there, unload, drive back, return when you need anything. For someone preparing to leave the country, this is the worst possible model:
The handover step is the part that breaks. Self-storage facilities do not have staff who will let DHL into your unit and watch your boxes get loaded. So you end up making one final trip — driving to the unit, meeting the courier, managing the handover yourself. Often on the day of your flight.
The pattern that has emerged from customers leaving Luxembourg is simple, and it is built around the fact that you may not be in the country when your boxes are dispatched.
We collect your sealed boxes from your Luxembourg address before you give the keys back to your landlord. You do not need a van or hired help. We bring standard Storagelux boxes if you are still packing.
Your boxes stay in our climate-controlled Luxembourg warehouse while you finalise the destination side. Whether that takes three days or three months, you pay €14.99 per box per month. There is no upper limit on how long you can store.
When your destination address is ready, you book a courier or we suggest one. They collect from us — not from you. You can be in Tokyo or Toronto when this happens. We prepare the labels, manifest, and dimensions paperwork the courier requires.
You receive an email when the courier collects, with the tracking number for the international leg. From that point the courier owns the shipment until it arrives at your new home.
Indicative pricing for a typical outbound move — eight boxes, six weeks of storage, courier handover:
You pay the international courier directly for the actual shipping leg. That cost is quoted separately based on destination, weight, volume, and speed — anywhere from €60 for a small DPD shipment to France, to €1,200+ for sea freight to Australia.
Most outbound moves from Luxembourg go to one of a small number of destinations. The shipping options change depending on where you are heading:
Short-distance moves are typically handled by DPD, GLS, or DHL Parcel. Transit time is one to three working days. Customs paperwork is minimal because all four are EU member states.
DHL Express or UPS are the usual choices. Transit time is two to five working days. Since Brexit, UK shipments require a customs declaration even for personal effects — your courier will provide the paperwork. You may need to demonstrate you have lived outside the UK to qualify for the Transfer of Residence relief.
Small shipments (a few boxes) typically go by DHL Express or FedEx International — three to seven working days, but expensive per kilogram. Larger moves go via a freight forwarder such as Crown Relocations or Interdean, by sea container, taking four to eight weeks.
Almost always sea freight via a relocation specialist. Transit time is six to twelve weeks for sea, or three to seven days for expedited air freight at significantly higher cost. We have handed shipments over to Crown, Allied, and Santa Fe Relocation in the past.
For any non-EU destination — UK, US, Switzerland, anywhere outside the European Union — your courier will require a packing list with item descriptions and declared values. We can supply this from your Storagelux inventory if you ask. A vague "household goods" declaration is enough for most moves but some destinations want more detail.
If your destination is ready immediately and you have someone who can receive your shipment — a partner, a family member, a corporate relocation handler — then traditional door-to-door international shipping is cleaner and often cheaper. Companies like Crown Relocations, Pickfords, AGS, and Sirelo all offer Luxembourg-to-anywhere services with no Luxembourg-side storage gap.
The Storagelux outbound approach is specifically for the in-between case. You have to leave Luxembourg by a fixed date, your destination is not yet ready, and you do not want to stand in a self-storage unit on the morning of your flight handing boxes to a courier yourself.
