How to Pack a Storage Box Like a Pro

Whether you're using our box storage service in Luxembourg for the first time or preparing for a seasonal swap, how you pack makes a real difference. Poorly packed boxes take up more space, cost more, and risk damaging your belongings. Here's how our team does it — and how you can too.

Start with the right box

Not all boxes are created equal. Our standard StorageLux boxes are designed specifically for storage in Luxembourg — uniform in size, double-walled, and stackable. If you're using your own, stick to medium-sized boxes. Large boxes are tempting but lead to overpacking, which makes them heavy, unstable, and harder to retrieve items from later.

Heavy items go in first

Books, kitchen appliances, and tools should sit at the bottom. Lighter items — bedding, clothing, cushions — go on top. This keeps the centre of gravity low, protects fragile items, and makes stacking safer when your boxes are stored in our warehouse. A common mistake is doing this the wrong way around: heavy things on top crush lightweight items and make boxes top-heavy.

Fill every gap

Empty space inside a box is wasted money and a risk to your items. Use clothing, towels, or bubble wrap to fill gaps around fragile items. A well-packed box should feel solid when you shake it — nothing sliding around. For seasonal storage in Luxembourg, this matters even more since your items may be stored for 3–6 months at a time.

Label everything clearly

Write the contents and room on the top and one side of every box. When you request a specific box back through StorageLux, a clear label means we can retrieve exactly what you need without opening multiple boxes. Even better — photograph the contents before sealing. Our online inventory system lets you track what's in each box so you always know what's where.

Seal properly

Use strong packing tape — two strips across the top, one along each seam. Boxes sealed with a single strip of weak tape can fail in transit. Our team always double-checks seals before loading, but a well-sealed box from the start protects your belongings at every step of the Luxembourg storage process.
